Months Ahead

How it works

See your balance, months ahead

Months Ahead is a free, private cashflow forecaster. Enter your accounts and the money coming in and going out, and watch your balance projected forward — honest whether you have five weeks of runway or thirty years of planning.

It doesn't touch your data or your wallet

That's the whole idea, so let's lead with it:

  • Free. No signup, no account, no ads, no trackers.
  • Entirely in your browser. There is no backend. Nothing is uploaded, and there are no bank logins or connections. Your numbers live in this browser's local storage and nowhere else.
  • Yours to take. Export a JSON backup any time, and bring your own bank CSVs in and out freely.

Plenty of apps project a balance from recurring income and expenses. The maths isn't the hard part — trust is. Months Ahead is built so there's simply nothing to leak: no servers, no accounts, no analytics that could ever see a dollar figure.

How the forecast is built

Your starting balance is the sum of the accounts you include. Loans you're servicing rather than repaying (a mortgage, a car loan) can be excluded — they stay in your net position but don't drag down the runway; only their recurring repayments do.

From there the engine walks forward day by day:

  • Each recurring item is laid out across the horizon according to its frequency and next-due date, with month-ends clamped correctly.
  • Escalation is annual. A bill that rises 3% a year bumps once on its anniversary — not every payment.
  • The spending lever scales every expense up or down so you can see the effect of belt-tightening (or not) instantly.
  • A positive balance can earn a return; the chart can be shown in nominal dollars or deflated into today's dollars.
  • One-off events — a bonus, a big purchase, a payout — land on their exact date.

The verdict is deliberately blunt. If your balance never hits zero, it tells you what you'll have at the end. If it does, it tells you how many months you have and roughly when the money runs out.

Importing a bank statement

Export a CSV from your bank and bring it in. Months Ahead detects the date, amount (or separate debit/credit), description and balance columns, finds repeating patterns deterministically — no AI, nothing sent anywhere — and proposes recurring items for you to accept or reject. Your statement is the source of truth; the proposals are a disposable suggestion you confirm explicitly.

What it isn't

It isn't a budgeting app, a bank aggregator, or financial advice. It's a clear-eyed projection from numbers you control, useful for the question that actually keeps people up at night: how long does this last?
